Kitchen Cleaning and Hygiene: Areas People Commonly Miss
The kitchen areas most often missed are the ones touched constantly but rarely cleaned: cupboard and fridge handles, light switches, the edges of appliances, the extractor and its filter, the gap between cooker and units, and the cloths and sponges used to clean everything else. Keeping these clean, and using separate cloths for different jobs, makes a real difference to kitchen hygiene.

Work surfaces
Clear worktops before cleaning so you reach the whole surface, including behind the kettle and toaster, and clean food preparation areas before and after use.
Handles and switches
Fridge, cupboard, oven and door handles and light switches are touched many times a day. Wipe them regularly.
Sinks and taps
Sinks, plugholes and tap bases collect food residue and limescale. Clean and descale them regularly.
Appliance edges
The sides of the cooker, the gap between appliances and units, and the fridge seals collect crumbs and spills that are easy to overlook.
Grease and extractors
Grease builds up on cupboard tops, tiles near the hob and extractor filters. Many filters can be washed; others need replacing on the manufacturer's schedule.
Floors
Kitchen floors need frequent cleaning, paying attention to edges and under the kickboards.
Cleaning tools and cross-contamination
Cloths and sponges can spread dirt if they are not cleaned or replaced often. Use separate cloths for raw food areas, general surfaces and floors, and wash them at a high temperature. Professional cleaners use colour-coded cloths for the same reason.
