5 Common DIY Cleaning Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
The most common home cleaning mistakes are using the wrong product for the surface, cleaning floors before dusting, using too much product, cleaning with dirty cloths and mops, and wiping disinfectant off before it has had time to work. Each one makes cleaning slower or less effective, and some can damage surfaces. All five are easy to fix.
1. Using the wrong product for the surface
Acidic cleaners etch marble and natural stone, abrasive creams scratch gloss finishes and stainless steel, and bleach can discolour fabrics and some plastics. Check the manufacturer's care guidance and test new products somewhere hidden first.
2. Cleaning floors before dusting
Dust falls. Work from top to bottom, dusting high surfaces first and finishing with the floor, so you are not cleaning the same dust twice.
3. Using too much product
More product does not mean cleaner. Excess leaves sticky residue that attracts dirt and smears on glass and gloss surfaces. Follow the dilution instructions.
4. Using dirty cloths and mops
A dirty cloth spreads dirt around. Rinse cloths often, wash them regularly at a high temperature, and use separate cloths for the bathroom and kitchen.
5. Rushing contact time
Disinfectants and descalers need time on the surface to work. Spray and wipe straight away and much of the benefit is lost. Check the label for the recommended contact time.

If a home has not had a thorough clean for a while, a professional deep clean resets the baseline, and a regular clean keeps it there.
